Gravel roofs, also known as ballasted asphalt roofs, are a time-tested roofing option for flat roofs. Gravel roofs are relatively long lived and offer good weather resistance where a standard built-up roof would not. In a gravel roof system, a roof is composed of plies of asphalt and felt much like a built-up roof. This sturdy and waterproof membrane is the topped with gravel. The gravel is rolled and embedded into the asphalt adding weight and wind resistance.

The gravel additionally protects the membrane from the sun’s heat and UV rays which cause blistering, cracking, and degrading. Standing water from blocked drainage can cause leakage on these flatter roofs as water levels rise, so light maintenance is required from time to time to check seals and clear drains.
